Unit 1 Smart cycling helmets & lights
A smart-helmet maker whose Aura Mips has independent tests and a Virginia Tech 5-star rating, with a high price, a heavy build and an app that testers found fiddly.

A well-tested smart helmet with real safety credentials, bought knowing its weight and app quirks
Unit 1 sells smart bicycle helmets with built-in front and rear lights, turn signals via a handlebar remote and an app-based crash alert, plus separate bike lights, a lit backpack and helmet accessories. It is a helmet and light brand, not a tactical gear maker, despite the unit1gear.com name.
The evidence is better than for most direct-to-consumer brands. Cyclingnews tested the Aura Mips in September 2026 and rated it four stars, scoring safety 10 out of 10, and road.cc scored it 7 out of 10 in October 2025. Both liked the lights and ventilation and both complained about weight and about changing light modes only through the app. The store itself shows 4.7 out of 5 across 830 Aura reviews and Trustpilot shows 4.7 across 286 reviews. The costs are a premium price, a remote that is sold separately and a helmet that testers called heavy.
Right for
- E-bike commuters who want a certified helmet with strong built-in lights
- Riders who like the idea of an automatic crash alert sent to a contact
- Buyers who want free returns for 30 days and a 2-year warranty
Wrong for
- Weight-conscious riders and long road or gravel rides, where testers noted the bulk
- Anyone who wants to change light modes with a button rather than a phone app
- Budget buyers, since the helmet is around EUR 260 before the remote
+What it gets right
- Independent testing. Cyclingnews and road.cc both tested the Aura Mips and published detailed verdicts, and Virginia Tech's helmet lab is cited for a 5-star rating.
- Certifications. The Aura lists NTA 8776, EN 1078 and CPSC compliance, which matters for faster e-bikes.
- Strong lights. Cyclingnews called the integrated lights class-leading and road.cc called them really good, with 350 lumens front and rear listed by the brand.
- Customer reputation. Trustpilot shows 4.7 from 286 reviews with 85% five-star, and the Aura page shows 4.7 from 830.
- Returns and warranty. 30 calendar days with free return shipping from most countries and a 2-year warranty shown on product pages.
−Where it slips
- Weight. Cyclingnews weighed a size L at 610g with the visor and called it very heavy; road.cc weighed 487g in a medium and also noted the weight.
- Light modes need the app. Both testers disliked that the power button does not cycle modes.
- Remote not included. Turn signals and the automatic brake light need the separate UNIT 1 Remote at EUR 39.90.
- App reliability. road.cc found the app glitchy during pairing and firmware updates, while Cyclingnews had no glitches.
- Price. Cyclingnews and road.cc both called it premium, with cheaper certified helmets and cheaper smart helmets available.
- Fit varies. The Cyclingnews tester found the size L gappy at the sides and tight at the forehead, which they attributed partly to head shape.
Weighted for independent testing, safety credentials and customer feedback
Independent testing and certifications carry the most weight for a helmet. This is a desk-research score: we have not bought or worn a Unit 1 helmet ourselves.
The long version
What Unit 1 sells, what independent testers found in the Aura and the older Faro, and what its returns, warranty and customer ratings say.
What Unit 1 is
Unit 1 is a brand of smart bicycle helmets and visibility gear sold at unit1gear.com. The catalogue we saw on 14 Oct 2026 lists the AURA Mips, FARO, FARO Mips, NEON and the SPARKY junior helmet, plus Smart Light bike lights, a UNIT 1 Remote, helmet visors and liners, and the TORCH backpack. Cyclingnews describes the Faro as the brand's 2020 debut and says its co-founder started the company after being hit by a car as a child while out without a helmet. We found no tactical bags or EDC lighting: this is a cycling-safety brand.

What independent testers found
Cyclingnews published a review of the Aura Mips by Simon Lock on 30 Sep 2026 and showed four stars out of five. It praised the top safety score from independent testers, the reactive lights, ventilation, the crash warning system and the FIDLOCK buckle, and it listed the premium price, the weight and app-only light modes as the downsides. Its scorecard gave safety 10 out of 10, ventilation 9, lights 8 and comfort 6. The tester measured a size L at 610g with the visor and found it gappy at the sides and tight at the forehead, while noting that head shape is personal. He was unconvinced that drivers will read helmet turn signals on a busy road.
road.cc scored the Aura Mips 7 out of 10 in a review by Dave Atkinson dated 6 Oct 2025, calling it a versatile smart urban helmet with excellent lights and decent crash detection. It found the app glitchy during pairing and firmware updates, disliked that the power button cannot change light modes and weighed its medium at 487g. It noted the NTA 8776 rating and the Mips layer put it about as protected as a non-full-face helmet can be, and it found the turn signals reasonably effective, with the reservation that they should not replace hand signals.
For the Faro, Cyclingnews published a review by Josh Ross in 2022, which is old, and we found no recent test of that model. Weight and certifications for the Aura differ between the brand's page (440g in a medium) and testers (487g medium, 610g large with visor), so treat weight as size and configuration dependent.
What customers report

Trustpilot shows 4.7 out of 5 from 286 reviews, with 85% five-star, 7% four-star, 1% three-star, 2% two-star and 5% one-star. The page notes the company has not recently invited reviews, so the sample may not be representative, and that it replies to 25% of negative reviews. On the store, the Aura page shows 4.7 from 830 reviews and the Faro 4.7 from 305. Store ratings are the brand's own widget and are not independently verified.
The helmets
AURA Mips

The Aura Mips is EUR 259.90 for the helmet alone on 14 Oct 2026. The page lists NTA 8776, EN 1078 and CPSC compliance, a Mips layer, 350 lumens front and rear, 10 fixed vents, IPX5 splash resistance, a 1350 mAh battery and Bluetooth 5.0 to the UNIT 1 App. It claims a Virginia Tech 5-star rating and a first-place ranking among urban smart helmets tested there. The helmet ships with the app, a USB-C cable and no remote. The Ride Pack with a remote and a visor was EUR 288.74 during Prime Week.
FARO
The Faro page showed EUR 172.95 as the total on 14 Oct 2026. It lists CPSC and EN 1078 only, a hard ABS shell, front, hidden and rear lights, a 1500 mAh battery and a stated weight of 640g in a medium. Like the Aura, it works with the remote and the app. It is the older and cheaper model, without the e-bike certification listed for the Aura.

Buying advice
Measure your head and read the sizing guide, because the fit complaint in the Cyclingnews review was specific to head shape. Decide whether the remote matters to you, since turn signals and the automatic brake light depend on it. If weight matters most, try a lighter helmet in a shop first.

Two helmets worth a look

| Product | Price | What it offers | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| AURA Mips | EUR 259.90 | NTA 8776 e-bike certified, Mips, integrated front and rear lights, Crash Alert, FIDLOCK buckle, magnetic brim | 4.7 from 830 reviews; Cyclingnews 4/5, road.cc 7/10; heavy; remote extra |

Pick the Aura if you ride a faster e-bike or want the strongest evidence behind the helmet. The Faro is the lower-cost route to the same lights and crash alert, with fewer safety certifications.

The best-evidenced smart helmet we have looked at, bought with eyes open on weight and price
[object Object]
The compromises are consistent across sources. It is heavy, it costs about EUR 260 before the remote, and the light modes live in an app. If you commute on an e-bike and can accept those, it is a credible choice.
Consider it if you
- You commute on an e-bike and want a certified helmet with built-in lights
- You want a crash alert and turn signals and will buy the remote
- You value free 30-day returns and a 2-year warranty
Skip it if you
- You need a light helmet for long rides
- You want to switch light modes with a button instead of a phone
- You want the lowest price for a certified helmet
How this review was put together
This is a desk-research review. We have not bought or worn a Unit 1 product. Product details, prices, returns and warranty come from unit1gear.com (checked 14 Oct 2026, euro prices shown to our location). Independent evidence comes from the Cyclingnews Aura Mips review by Simon Lock (30 Sep 2026), the road.cc Aura Mips review by Dave Atkinson (6 Oct 2025) and the Cyclingnews Faro review by Josh Ross (last updated 23 Aug 2022). Customer ratings are from Trustpilot (286 reviews, checked 14 Oct 2026) and the store's own review widget. The Virginia Tech 5-star rating is the brand's claim, repeated in the Cyclingnews review; we did not open the Virginia Tech ratings page. Trustpilot notes the company has no recent history of asking for reviews and replies to 25% of negative reviews. We did not see the brand's shipping help centre in full. We wrote our own text.
